Trinidad and Tobago U17 coach assess Black Starlet Kelvin Bossman

The young Soca Warriors will open to Ghana on the 20th of August. Ghana have two FIFA U-17 World Cup titles in 1991 & 1995 and were runners-up in 1993 to Nigeria and 1997 to Brazil respectively. In 1991 and 1993 Ghana's Nii Odartey Lamptey and Daniel Addo took the Adidas Golden Ball award.

Now in 2007 Kelvin Owusu Bossman, who plays with English Premiership outfit Reading, is one of the Black Starlets star players. The attacker is also bullish about his chances of breaking into the first team of Reading. Ghana have played at seven past FIFA U-17 World Cups, the first of which was in 1989. Ghana have twice been African champions at U-17 level and were runners-up two years ago. They are coached by Fred Osam Duodu who is one of African football's coaching legends.

Kelvin Bossman, Reading's Ghanaian youngster, is making waves at youth level for club and country

Bossman, just turned 16, is impressing with Reading's Under-18 team with two goals in two matches and has been tipped to link up with the Ghana squad in the near future.

"Claude Leroy (Ghana's coach) has been impressed by what he's seen so far and he will definitely have him in mind if he continues progressing at the rate he is," Bossman's agent Andrew Augustus said. "He's got the right attributes and attitude, and he's been helped a lot by Proglobal's welfare advisor Lovette Quartey." A quick, direct striker, Bossman has been called up by Ghana's Under-17's to represent them at the upcoming African Championships.

Background

"I've been in England for practically six years now," Bossman told eurosport.co.uk. "I only started football when I left primary school and have been with Reading for four to five years. I learnt to play football here. Before I left Ghana I never played football - I did athletics, 100 metres mainly. I don't really do that any more as I don't have time with training and schoolwork."

Style of play

"Managers say that I'm really quick, they tell me to get the ball and run at defences. "But I enjoy the physical side of it too."

Heroes

"I love watching Thierry Henry - I've tried to adapt my game to his style. I'm trying to emulate him. "I also look up to Didier Drogba, because of his strength and his goals&hellip and I support Chelsea!" "At Reading one player in particular that I admire is Kevin Doyle. "He's such a hard-working player and he's helped me a lot because I want to be like him - a hard-working player off-the-ball, defensively, chasing back when I haven't got possession. "I'm working on that side of my game at the moment."

Short-term goals

"This season I want to take my opportunity with Ghana but when I get back I just want to play more games at youth level for Reading. "My target over the next few years is to break into the Reading first team aged 17 or 18."

Long-term goals

"I have been called up for the Ghana Under-17s. Although I would probably be eligible to play for England, specifically I'm looking to play for Ghana. "During the World Cup I was supporting Ghana; it was great. They helped improve the image of the country, for football and as a whole. "Ghana was missing someone to put the ball in the back of the net though, and we had lots of opportunities, especially against Brazil. "That's my goal long-term, to represent Ghana and it can be achieved but only with a lot of hard work and determination." Ghana's senior squad face Nigeria at Brentford's Griffin Park ground on Tuesday night.
